Etymology
Maizon Wath, Mazinwath 1657, 1705 PR, Masonwath 1697 ib, Mazen Wath 1728 ib, Mazing -Wath 1785 PR(CG), Mazon Wath 1743 PR(R). This may be named from the local family of Mason or Mayson (1600–1770 PR 36, 83, etc.), but there is a lost place in Asby called Maysingile 1190, 1295Lowth , -gele 1280 ib (p), Maisiggilla 13 HMC x, 321, 'titmouse ravine', from ON meisingr and gil , of the same origin as Mazongill (ii, 47supra ). The ravine is the head of Potts Beck and the ford (v. vað ) crosses this stream.
