Etymology
'Thorn-tree in the gore of land', v. gāra , þorn . On the later forms cf. Phonol. §§5, 9. Part of the estate was in Crosby Ravensworth and called Gaythorn Plain (ii, 159infra ). For Gaw - cf. Clawthorpe (i, 58).
