Etymology

Staple Oak, 1771 M, Stapelok 1343MinAcct , Stapelak (e )1367, l. 14 Kirkst, Stapilloke 1423MinAcct , Stableoke 1578 WillY, Lower Stablock 1590 ib, 'Oak-tree near the pillar or post', v. stapol , āc , cf. Stapleton Terne La 186 (Stapilthorne ) and OE  to stapola ðorne (BCS 596). The precise meaning is unknown, but BCS 629 speaks of a 'thorn-tree where the post stands' (to þam þorne þær se stapul stent ).
