Etymology

Burn Fell, Burn Ho & Burn Slack, Burn Hill , Burn House 1771 M, Burn Fell 1844TA . The first el. in these names, which probably like Brungill Moor supra originate with Burn Fell, is uncertain, but it is, from the forms, most likely to be a metathesised form of ON  bruni '(a place cleared by) burning'; v. fjall 'mountain', slakki 'a hollow'.
