Etymology

'The moor belonging to Malham', v. mōr , here the great moorland tract between Wharfedale and Ribblesdale which was a valuable sheep-raising estate of Fountains Abbey. The first el. was originally the gen.pl. (Malha ) of the word found in Malham 133supra , and the use of the gen.pl. in this, in Malhamdale 128supra , and in Malham Water and Water Houses infra , shows that the significance of the el. in Malham must still have been felt when these p.ns. came into being.
