Etymology

Trenhouse, Tranehouse c. 1416 Fount, Tranehowse , Tranehouse hull , Tranehull house 1540 ib, Tranhous 1457 FountBurs, 1496FountRent , Tranhous hull 1535 VE, (y e) Traynhous (e )1535 VEet freq to 1605 PRMl, Treanehouses 1655 ib, Tarnehouses 1699 ib, Trennhouse 1676 ib, Trenice 1817 M. 'Houses haunted by cranes', v. trani , hūs , or 'Trani's houses' from the ON  byname Trani ; v : also hulu 'a shed'.One spelling in Tarne - has been influenced by the name of Malham Tarn; although Trenhouse is near the foot of Malham Tarn, it is unlikely to be named from it, for the metathesis of tarn to tran , whilst not without parallel, would be unusual with such a well-known appellative.
