Etymology

Capon Hall [ˈkapnə], Caupmanhow 1457 FountBurs, Copmanhow (e )1496FountRent , 1535 VE, 1540 Fount, Caponhaull 1550 WillY, Caponhaw (e )1598 TC, 1601 FF, 1628Thn 98, Capanhowe 1592 WillY, Capenhalghe 1623 PRMl. 'Kaupman's hill', v. haugr . The first el. is probably the ON  pers.n. Kaupmaðr , Kaupmann or possibly ON  kaup-maðr (gen.pl. kaup-manna ) 'merchant'. On the development of Caup - to Cap - cf. Phonol. § 8; Hall is an inverted spelling for -haw of a frequent type which arose when -hall was vocalised to -hau (l ).
