Historical Forms

  • Stratesergum 1086 DB
  • Starkesbergh (sic) 1251 Puds
  • Starkeshergh 1251 FF
  • Startholfhisherix Hy3 Puds

Etymology

Starkerghs (lost), Stratesergum 1086 DB, Starkesbergh (sic)1251 Puds, Starkeshergh 1251 FF, Startholfhisherix Hy 3 Puds. There is some doubt about both the location and identity of these forms. They would appear to refer to some place in Rimington or Middop 171supra . The first el. appears to be a pers.n. corresponding to OG  Starculf (cf. Feilitzen 373) or an unrecorded ON  Starkulfr , of which Starkes - is a shortened form, and so too no doubt the DB Strates - (sic for Starces -). The second el. is ON  erg 'dairy farm, shieling'.
