Etymology

'Athelwine's outlying farmstead', v. þorp . The pers.n. is OE  Æþelwine ; on the forms with AN  Ail -, Ael - for Æðel - cf. Feilitzen 102 ff. Elfwinetrop c. 1155 YCh 642 (Kirkst 188) is not to be confused with Ellenthorpe (v. YCh i, 508 n).
