Slindon

Major Settlement in the Parish of Slindon

Historical Forms

  • Eslindone 1086 DB
  • Slindon(e) 1188 P
  • Slingdon 12th Add

Etymology

This is probably a compound of a lost OE  slinu, 'slope,' hill,' and dun. v. PN La 185 (s. n. Slyne), and cf. Slindon (St), DB Slindone . This word would be allied to the slind of Slinfold infra 159. We may have this element in Slimbridge (Gl), DBHeslinbruge , 1281 Ipm Slinbrugge , which may mean 'bridge by the slope' or, less probably, 'sloping bridge.'
