Etymology

Woolpack Fm is to be associated with the families of Wlfpec ' (sic) 1202 Cur, Wlfpot 1203 Abbr and Wolputte 1327 SR. It is clearly from OE  wulf-pytt , 'wolf-pit,' i.e. for snaring such. Miss Holgate suggests with much probability that this is actually the wulfpytt of BCS 197. That comes next to Henfield in Lindfield, which is only three or four miles away. For confusion of final k and t , cf. Crabbet supra 281. Folk-etymology has also been at work.
