Early-attested site in the Parish of Fletching

Etymology

Mallingdown Fm, cf. Maulyngestone 1285CplM , Mallingeston , Mallyngestone 1291, 1295MinAcct , Malingstone 1442FM . The correct name would seem to be Malling-stone . It lies on the bounds of Fletching-Maresfield and was probably a boundary- stone of one of the manors of South Malling. Cf. Budlett's Common infra 351.
