Etymology

Snathurst Wood (6″) is Snoteherst in 1422 (Ct ) and is doubtless the same name as Snodhurst (K), BCS 370 Snadhyrst . This is a compound of snad and hyrst , descriptive of an isolated wood or a clearing in a wood. For a further Sussex example of this element, cf. tattingsnad (BCS208) in the bounds of Icklesham.
