Etymology

Stairbridge Fm is Stayers bridge in 1601 (Rowe), Stayerbridge 1613 SAC 58, 9, Stayrebridge 1617 SAC 58, 16, and is to be associated with the families of Wm de Stegher (1271Ass ), John atte Steghere (1296 SR). For the possible meaning of such a pers. name, v. Steer's Common supra 107. It is clear that the association between the elements 'stair' and 'bridge' is here a chance one, so that we need not look for any particular kind of bridge.
