Garston's Fm

Early-attested site in the Parish of Bolney

Historical Forms

  • Gassons 1823 G
  • atte Gerston 1296 SR

Etymology

Garston's Fm was called Gassons in 1823 (G) and was long so called locally. It was the home of Ralph atte Gerston (1296 SR) and the name Ga (r )ston is frequent in the Parish Register, v. gærstun . Mr Salzman points out that it may be the Garton (sic) of the Pipe Roll for 1187, held by a family which had land in the neighbouring Twineham.
