Etymology

This would seem to be an ingas-formation and as there is no significant word which can form the first element it is probably patronymic in character. The personal name Lippa may be inferred in OE  from the p.n. lippan dic in a Berkshire charter (BCS 924). From this may have been formed an r -extension Lipper or Lippera , like that found in the pers. name Tepra (BCS 32, 157). For such r -extension names, v. Mansion in English Studies 11, 25 and for further examples v. PN Wo 234, 266, 225 and PN NRY 85, 298. The case for such a formation here is strengthened by the fact that we have what seems to be a similar name in Peppering infra 167. Hence, 'people of Lipper or Lippera .'
