Etymology

The existence of a pers. name Bæcci in OE  is made probable by the p.n.'s Bæcces wyrð , now Batchworth (Herts), in 1007 (Crawf 11) and Batsford (Gl), Baeccesore in BCS 163. Hence, 'Bæcci 's pool.' v. mere . The present form is pseudo-manorial.
