Etymology

Loats Lane (6″) may be referred to in le Widelote , Suthtlote (1482Ct ). Close at hand is Westloats Lane (6″) in Bognor.Cf. also Whitelote in Portslade (1377 Pat). Professor Ekwall and Dr Ritter suggest that here we have OE  hlot , 'lot,' 'allotted portion.' For its use in connexion with land, v. B. T. Supplt, s. v .
