Earlsfield

Early-attested site in the Parish of Wandsworth

Etymology

Earlsfield. As there is no record of the manor of Wandsworth ever having been in the possession of the Earls of Surrey (cf. Earlswood infra 305), this name is no doubt of modern origin and is perhaps to be associated with the family of Earl (e ), found in the parish in 1606, 1608 et freq (ParReg), while a John le Erl appears in the neighbouring parish of Putney as early as 1332 (SR).
