Etymology

Goldwell Spinney (6″) is so named c. 1840TA . It takes name from Goldewell 1591Survey (this appears to be roughly in the same place as the present spinney, and not connected with Cordle Bushes in spite of the similarity of the names), Goldwell 1679BodlT . v. w(i)elle; the first element might be golde , 'marigold.' The same name occurs in a charter in Beckley, v. 16.
