Etymology

The first element is the lost OE  *w (i )erpels , possibly meaning 'path,' which is the source of the dialectal wapple , 'bridle-way.'Cf. Worplesdon, PN Sr 161–2, and Wapsbourne Fm, PN Sx 298.The second element is probably 'grove,' v. grāf(a).
