Etymology

'Farm of a man nicknamed “Owl-beard”' from ON  Uglubarði (cf. Lindkvist lxii, and NP, ZEN s.n.) and v. by . The change of -bardby to -barnby is due to association of the name with Barnby across the river Esk.
