Etymology

v. kjarr . The first element is not clear, but it may be the pers. name Bruning , common in the 11th cent. The modern form arises from metathesis of Brun - to Burn -, the dialectal pronunciation of which is [bɔrn] or [bɔˑn] (v. Introd. xxxii).
