Etymology

'Bark's farmstead, village', v. tūn . The first el. is the Scand pers.n. ON  Bǫrkr , a name which is well attested in Iceland, but hardly at all elsewhere (see Lind 186–7), though a weak ODan  Barki is on record (DGP I, 96). The same name also occurs in Barkston (Threo Wapentake Kest, DLPN 9) and in the Leicestershire name Barkestone (Framland Hundred, PN Lei 2 199 f.). See also below, under Little Carlton.
