Etymology

Behindby (lost), vico que vocatur Bihindeby 13 (Ed1) Newh , Behyndby 1436 AD vi, campo voc byhyndby 1457TCC , Beindby 1491Surv , Beindeby 1492GrimsExtent , bei 'nbye 1543ib , Behinbie c.1600GrimsMap (PRO ); this is apparently a unique name which means literally '(the place) behind, at the back of the town', from OE  behindan, ME  bihinde(n) and . The name suggests that ON  was still a place-name forming el. in north L in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. On the c.1600 map it is the name of a large area to the west of Bargate and Carter Gate. For a further example of behindan , v. PN L 3, 28.
