Etymology

The Node is le Nodemede 1426Cassio , le Node 1552 Pat, The Noads 1654 Wills, and was the home of Richard ate Node (1282–5WAM ) and Robert atte Node (1314SR ). Cf. The Nodes in Totland (Wt), the home of Adam atten Ode (1311Ass ).The initial n in this name is probably, as in many other Hertfordshire names (v. Introd. xxv), a relic of ME  atten for OE  æt þam , 'at the.' Ode is probably from OE  ād , 'pile, heap, funeral pile.' It is impossible to recover the exact sense of the word in this place-name.
