Etymology

Awres Glow, Auresglew (e )1628Comm , 1633SPDom 19, Oresglow 1643Comm . This is a difficult name about which only speculation is possible. The name appears to refer to a glade or walk in the Forest; the second el. may possibly be OE  glēow , glīw 'mirth, play, sport', possibly used like OE  lāc and plega to denote 'a place for play or sport', and the first el. the p.n. Awre (which is the adjacent parish, the village being 4 miles to the south-east). But more probably the name is a compound of 'ore' (v. ōra 2 ) and ModE  glow 'heat' from OE  glōwan 'to glow, burn', perhaps denoting 'a place where ore was smelted', a not unlikely compound in this area; in this case the spelling Aur - instead of Ore - is analogical from the p.n. Awre.
