Etymology

Like Wimborne M. par. supra , named from the river here (formerly the Wimborne , now called R. Allen, v. RNs.infra ); Up means 'higher up (the river)', v. upp , cf. All Hallows infra , Upwey 1245. The affixes Malemayns and Plecy are manorial: Nicholas Malemains , Nicholas Malemeins was here in 1227 FF, 1230 Cl, and the manor belonged to Robert de Plassetis , Robert de Plecys in 1259 FF, 1275 RH, cf. Maud de Plecy 1332 SR, Peter Plecy 1403 Middy John Plecy 1489 Ipm, v. Hutch3 3578 ff. St Giles is from the dedication of the church, v. St Giles's Church infra .
