The affixes Abbatis and Monkton allude to its possession by the priory of Cranborne (in 1086 DB, v. VCHDo 374) and later by the abbey of Tewkesbury (as in 1236 FF, v. Hutch3 3388), v. munuc , tūn , cf. Tarrant Monkton par. infra . It gave name to the hundred of Monkton Up Wimborne infra . There was once a chapel here dedicated to St Andrew, alluded to as 'the chapel of Upwinborne '1550 Hutch3 3389.
