Etymology

'Long farm', v. lang 1 , tūn ; Hutch3 1 630 observes 'the village consists of one street, near a mile in length'. Langton Wallis (no longer marked on the maps in this par. but cf. Langton Wallis in Arne par. infra ) takes its name from the family of Ing(el)ram le Waleys who was here in 1276 Pat, 1280Ass , Ipm, 1285 FA, etc; West Langton and probably Langeton juxta Corf Cartel , — by Corft also denote this manor, and Langton Averey (e ) probably refers to the whole or part of it, Averey representing OFr  Auverey , Auveré < OG  Alverad with reference to its early possession by one of the Alvreds of Lincoln (v. Hutch3 1718, VCHDo 355–6, and Okeford Fitzpaine par. infra ), cf. however Hutch3 1 717 where Averey is thought to be a corruption of Avenel , a family of which name claimed advowson of the church in 1213 (though the surname (d ')Avenel should be read Daneuel (Daneville ) according to DoNHAS 14 110). Langton Matravers (alternatively called Estlangton and probably also Langeton iuxta Swanwich ) takes its name from the family of John Mautravers who was here in 1281 FF, 1297 Ipm, 1333Wim , etc., cf. Lytchett Matravers par. infra . For the affixes, v. ēast , west , Isle of Purbeck supra , Corfe C. par. supra , Swanage par. infra .
