Etymology

Causeway (ST 391032), Cauxeshegh ', Cauzeshey 13 (15) Forde , Caus (h )ey 1442Strode , Causey 1499 Ipm, Cawesey 1505Pole , Cawcy 1576DCMDeed , Causehay 1811 OS, 'enclosure of a family called Caux or Cauz ', from (ge)hæg, to be associated with Rogerus le Cauzin Cauzsuslond 13 (15) Forde , v. land , and for other occurrences of the surname in Do v. 1332 SR pp. 50, 69. It will be noted that the association of the name with the word causeway is only late, cf. also Causeway Fm in Radipole par. 1 240 which is from the same surname with a different second el.
