Etymology
'Village on a hill', from dūn and hām , with hyll . The affix, from the outcropping rock of the hill on which the village stands, is stān , stānig 'a rock', 'stony' and the ME adj. stanry (cf. stannery NED (from 1440), stanners NED, and stǣner ), which also enters into le Stanryhurst 1390, 259 infra .
