Etymology
The second el. of this p.n. is The Lyme 1 2. The formation of this p.n. may be analogous with that of Burslem St which is 'Burgweard's or Burgheard's part of The Lyme ' (DEPN, Duignan). In that case, the first el. of Audlem would be the OE pers.n. Alda , Ealda . However, the forms of Audlem would support derivation from a first el. ald 'old, former', and the p.n. probably means 'formerly in The Lyme , former Lyme territory'. This raises unanswered questions of the history and geography of The Lyme , and in particular, of the time and and cause of Audlem's removal from it.
