Etymology
Ashton on Mersey parish, an independent rectory by 1350, supposed to have been originally part of Bowdon parish (Chet OS viii 310), contained the townships of Sale and part of Ashton, which was partly in Bowdon parish.Ashton and Sale are now merged in Sale municipal borough c.p.
