Etymology

'Ash-tree farm', v. æsc , tūn . The suffixes -iuxta Merse , -super Merseybanke etc., describe the situation on the south bank of R. Mersey, and the latter suffix stands alone in (Richard Assheton of) Mers (s )ebank (e ), Mersay Bonk 1445, 1448, ChRR, AD, (parish of Assheton vel ) Merseebanke 1480 Adl, as an alternative name for the place, v. banke , cf. R. Mersey i 31. It adjoins Carrington and Sale 17, 5infra .
