Etymology
, “ in the outbuildings of a farm - house , are the remains of the Priory , which was founded in 1185 , by Theobold de Valoins , for canons of the order of St . Augustine ” ( White 770 ) . A few more details about the remains are given by Pevsner , who says , “ Of the church only excavations could establish the plan ” ( Pevsner 165 ) . Hickling Priory came to the Crown at the Dissolution and was then granted to Sir William Wodehouse of Hickling (Blomefield IX303f.) .
