Etymology

An ing -derivative of the OE  pers.n. Hicel (a ), found in Hiceles wyrþ (wyrð ) BCS 27, 862. v. PN-ing 1962: 58. The palatalization of c would have been stopped in forms before the consonant.Identical with this name is Hickling in Nt (PN Nt 235). The church, dedicated to St Mary, was appropriated to Hickling Priory until the Dissolution (Blomefield IX 306, v. Priory Farm infra ).
