Etymology

Earlier references to a mill in Tealby include molendinum de Tauelesbi 1136–40 (1464) Pat, unum molendini quem habuimus super aquam de teuelesby Hy2 (1409) Gilb (i.e. on the R. Rase), unum molendinum in villa de Tefleby 1187 (1409) ib, Tevilbye , firma molend ', Tevilbye , firma molend ' aquat '1538–39 Dugd vi, “a water-mill in Tevylbe ”1541 LP xvi , each of which denoted a mill owned by Sixhills Priory . The first reference under 1538 – 39 suggests that this is a different mill from the watermill . Indeed , certainly from DB onwards , there were several mills in the village - - molendino de Willelmi de Baiocis 1202 Ass , “ two water mills in Teylbye which belonged to Willoughton ” , i.e. “ the commandry of Willoughton , Lincs , and St John 's of Jerusalem ” 1543 LP xviii , and Fower mylnes in Teavelby 1627Td 'E . Note also the various f. ns . in Mill in f. ns . ( a ) infra .
