( 1799 Map , pasture land called Castell Hill ElizJervoiseSh ) ( 1840TA ) , cf. Castle Hill Gate 1585 BrEll , v. castel(l) ; the earthwork probably represents ' a temporary fortification dating from the period of the 12th century civil war ' ( RCHM 476 ) . Cf. the bounds of Gillingham forest which proceed ' under the castle ' in 1300Hutch3 3620 , and cf. Hutch1 (223) who states : ' Though no mention is made of a castle , yet there seems to have been one on Castle - Green , a little W of St Mary 's , by some called Boltbury ; where the inhabitants have a tradition the old town or city stood ' ; the name Boltbury has not been noted elsewhere .
