, cf. ad molend ' de castello 1300 Hutch3 2317 ( in a description of the bounds of Powerstock forest ) , Castle Mill 1811OS , Castle (Brow ), Castle Mill Hay , Castle Orchard 1839TA , all named from ' Castle (remains of) ' 6 ″ , ' Motte & Bailey ' 1 ″ , v. RCHM 1183–4 ; the site is marked Bank 1811 OS and is referred to in 1774 Hutch1 1362 who adds : ' The common people call it Poorstock - Castle , and have a tradition that it was a winter - palace of king Athelstan 's . ' Hutch 3 2 318 notes that ' from entries in the Pipe Rolls we learn that King John had a house of some sort at Poorstock , and this was probably the site ' , which may indeed be the case , cf. domorum (Regis ) de Pourstoch '1206–14 P , domus de Porstok 1224 Pat .
