Etymology

From OE  cumb 'valley' with an obscure first el. The later forms have probably been influenced by Mapperton par. infra . The manor was once possessed by the Browne family, cf. Edmund Browne , Nicolas Browne 1579 Hutch3, Henry Browne , Hugh Browne , John Browne , Joseph Browne , Susanna Browne , William Browne 1664 HTax, also John Browns Howse ib and the f.n. Browns Hill infra .
