, named from , Spitals (or Kill Devil )1842TA , an area of eroded undercliff below Timber Hill infra and ' Spring' (6″) , possibly land once belonging to the lost Hospital of St Mary and the Holy Spirit supra , from ME  spitel ' hospital ' ; alternatively perhaps a derogatory name from eModE  spittle ' saliva ' , applied figuratively to damp and slimy ground , a notion reinforced by its alternative nickname Kill Devil .
