Historical Forms

  • Kite Whistle 1839 TA

Etymology

, Kite Whistle 1839TA , one of several instances of this name in Do , none of them recorded earlier than this one ( cf. Kit Whistle in Corfe M . par . 2 19 , Kit Whistle Barn in Sydling St N . par . supra , Kitwhistle Gorse in Beaminster par . supra , Kid Whistle in Bradpole par . supra , and Kitewhistle in Netherbury par . infra ) ; the allusion would seem to be to the ' whistle ' ( the high - pitched mewing call ) of the kite , the shortening of kite ( OE  cȳta ) to Kit ( t ) being common , as in Kitt Hill in Sherborne 3361 and the early spellings of the f.n. Kite Hill infra .
