Etymology

, Torford 1811OS , probably ' ford at the rock ' , v. torr , ford , cf. High Tor supra ; Turford is on the shores of Wareham Channel ( the estuary of R . Frome ) in Wareham par . infra , and this was perhaps a place where the river could at one time be crossed , but there is also a small stream or inlet marked 6 ″ to which the name might refer .
