Etymology

'The gallows', v. wearg-rōd, as first proposed by Ekwall in Studies1 91, cf. Wareham par. infra ; Ekwall loc. cit. suggested that the hard -g - may have arisen from early misdivision of the compound as wear -grōd . Worgret is one mile W of Wareham on the road to Dorchester. There was a mill here in 1086 DB (VCHDo 376, 95), cf. Stoborough supra .
