Etymology

. For this name Sedgefield (47) quotes a form Elfhow (1488 Ipm) , but this refers to a place in the neighbourhood of Hutton in the Forest (supra 209) . It may of course be that the present is another example of the same name , meaning ' elf hill . ' Cf. also Elf Hall supra 418 .
