Etymology

is said by Parker ( 38 ) to have been named after a ship , presumably a ship with a sea - nymph for figure - head ; cf. Lycidas 99 , “ sleek Panope with all her sisters play 'd . ” Saltcoats is so named in 1657 (CW xiv) . Cf. Salt Cotessupra 292 , and Saltcotecroft 1578Cocker and supra 147 .
