Etymology

It is difficult to say if this is a genuine hōh -tūn , 'hill-farm' (v. hoh ), or derives its name from someone bearing the name Houghton derived from some place elsewhere. It lies about a third of a mile south-south-west of Alfrick Church on the edge of a promontory enclosed by the 300 ft. contour, so that topographically the first solution is quite possible.
