Etymology

Richardson (6″) is Ricardeston (e )1242 Fees, 1245 WM xvi, 1255 RH, 1316 FA, Richardeston , Rychardeston 1249, 1370Ass , Richardston al. Ricarston 1561FF , Rickersons 1818 O.S. This is a post- Conquest tun-formation. In 1168 (P) we have mention of Winterburn ' Ric ' fil. Hug ' and in 1189 (GlastInq) one Ricardus held land in Winterburna . Hence 'Richard 's farm,' v. tun .Richard is an OFr personal name of Germanic origin. Rickeston, found twice in Pembrokeshire, has the same history (NCPNW 28, 71).
