Etymology

Rabson Fm is Wintreborne 1086 DB, Northwinterburna t. Hy 2 (1270) Ch, North Wynterburn 1178 BM, Abbedeston 1242 Fees, Rabbedeston (e )1275 RH, 1316, 1428 FA, Rabboteston 1279Ass , Rabbodesdon 1332, Robston 1544SR , Northwynterborne al. Rabeston 1588, Rabson 1719Recov , Rapson 1773 A and D.According to Jones (242) this is the DB manor held by the Abbess of Amesbury. Abbedeston would seem to stand for earlier Abbedesseton and the forms with initial r must be explained as coming from ME  at ther Abbedeston , 'at the Abbessfarm or manor.' For the forms cf.
